significance of the program

Increasing awareness through film and the arts has personal, professional and social results, expanding the horizons of at-risk youth.

Specifically, an arts education involving awareness raising film benefits students by:

  • Developing personal qualities such as intuition, reasoning, imagination, critical thinking;
  • Introducing students to a variety of ways of thinking and living;
  • Enhancing understanding of themselves and others;
  • Recognizing the idea that education is not solely acquired from textbooks simultaneously motivating attendance, discipline, and involvement;
  • Demonstrating the cause and effect of studying, achieving self  confidence and success;
  • Exposing students to potential careers.
  • Fostering a lifelong appreciation for and support of the arts.

Media curriculum also has societal and workforce benefits as students gain skills in:

  • Learning creative ways of approaching different situations;
  • Working and communicating effectively within groups;
  • Adopting alternative forms of self expression;
  • Increasing familiarity with new media that are transferable into work skills;
  • Understanding how much media reflects and influences culture; and,
  • Making decisions in situations where there are no easily-defined answers.
